We breed geranium in the country: especially planting and care in the open ground, as well as a photo
Geranium is an annual or perennial plant rhizome herbaceous plant. The stem is forked and branched, with a height of 40 to 60 centimeters. Flowers can be solitary or collected in inflorescences - depending on the species.
Geranium leaves exude a refreshing mint or lemon scent. That is why this flower is often grown in the house, but it is also suitable for open ground. A more thorough acquaintance with an old acquaintance will reveal many interesting facts and, possibly, in the near future an aesthetic geranium will decorate your cottage.
Most varieties are plants with an average need for moisture. In addition, geranium is not particularly whimsical to climatic conditions, and then it is grown almost throughout Russia. However, most often this flower is found in the Caucasus.
Planting Features
There is an opinion that geranium is only an indoor flower and is not quite suitable for planting in open ground. In fact, this is not at all true - in view of its excellent decorative properties and unpretentiousness regarding climatic conditions, It is great for landscape design.
Often, geranium bushes are used to transition between shrubby and contrasting shrubs.
Reference! In addition to decorative properties, geranium in open ground is used for more practical purposes. This is due to the structural features of the root system - the root does not grow in depth, but in breadth.Thus, geranium, as it were, covers the ground. This protects the soil from weeds and drying out.
Also, the plant promotes water and air erosion on the soil and perfectly contributes to reclamation.
Plant geraniums only after cold weather. This is best done when the soil is fully warmed up, that is, somewhere in the middle of May. Also, it will not be amiss to wait for the first warm spring rain so that the soil is saturated - such conditions are optimal for the adaptation of the flower.
If it’s already hot in the above period, then disembarkation is best done in the morning or in the evening.
Preparation of flower, soil and conditions
Most often, the planting of geraniums in open ground occurs by cutting an adult bush. Before planting, seedlings should be properly prepared - the stalk must be held in a stimulating solution and treated with activated charcoal. In this case, the plant can be transferred to the soil after 2-3 weeks.
If it is supposed to transplant geranium with the formed root system, then planting can be carried out immediately after processing with a solution.
As for the soil, light, airy soil is suitable for planting. It will also be necessary to carry out preparatory work, namely:
- If possible, then during the autumn digging, it is necessary to fertilize the earth with mineral substances.
- Immediately before planting, the soil must be “acidified”. For this, oxalic, citric acid or iron sulfate is suitable.
Also note the following:
- The soil must be drained.
- A special layer of peat, sand and nutritious garden soil should be prepared in the planting pit. Such mixtures, by the way, can be purchased in special stores.
- The depth of the pit should be such that the root system fits freely, without constraint.
How to plant out of the pot on the street?
Planting a plant is possible only when all preparatory work has been completed. If it is planned to plant an adult plant, then before planting the root must be treated with a stimulant. You need to buy such drugs in specialized stores, use strictly according to the instructions.
The process of preparation and landing can be represented conditionally as follows:
- thoroughly loosen the earth, digging it about 35 centimeters in depth;
- on the excavated surface, spread a layer of compost of 5-10 cm and mix it with the top layer of soil;
- dig a hole of sufficient depth (about 25 cm);
- at the bottom of the pit, lay a layer 1-2 cm thick of sand, peat and nutrient soil, or from an already prepared mixture;
- gently pull the plant out of the container and transfer it into the pit. Make sure that the root system is not damaged;
- gently sprinkle with earth and trample slightly;
- water with water, but not too much.
If you plan to plant a number of flowers, you need to observe the optimal distance between them. For cuttings - 15-20 centimeters, for adult bushes - 60 cm.

What to do after?
The first two weeks after planting, you need to ensure that the sun does not fall on the plant, in other words, you need to provide the bush with a shadow. Also you should pay attention to the following recommendations for plant care after planting:
- the soil around the plant needs to be cleaned of weeds;
- Do not water and overheat the soil profusely. The optimum temperature of the soil for geraniums is 15-20 degrees Celsius;
- you need to use insecticides to protect against parasites;
- Do not spray the leaves;
- need to be fertilized with mineral fertilizers every 1-2 weeks;
- if the soil is dry, then feeding with liquid substance is impossible - this will lead to a burn of the root system;
- before the first frosts you need to cut to the length of the shoots up to 5 centimeters.
For fertilizer, you can use the following substances:
- nitrogen;
- phosphorus;
- potassium.

Possible problems
If, after planting, the plant begins to fade or strange spots appear on the leaves, then it is likely that the flower was struck by the disease. In this case, you need to treat the plant with insecticides.
Reference! It is quite common when, after planting geraniums under optimal weather conditions, cold weather sets in. It is not always advisable to transplant the plant back into the pot, as this can be traumatic for the flower itself. In such cases, you need to warm the soil around the bush and cover the flower with a film so that a mini-greenhouse is created.In general, if step by step and correctly follow all the recommendations regarding the preparation, planting and subsequent care of the flower, then no problems arise.
Due to the fact that in the first two weeks, geranium is especially vulnerable to parasites, sudden changes in temperature and soil condition, you need to carefully care for it. This will help the plant grow stronger and grow healthy.
